Dr. Amando Silva Awards

On May 27, 2023, distinguished Filipino-American public servants who embody the spirit of Dr. Amando Silva will be honored at the annual Silva Awards. These exceptional individuals are chosen from a carefully curated shortlist of nominees. The prestigious 2023 Silva Awards ceremony will take place at the Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, California, at 5:30 pm. Guests are invited to don their finest black-tie attire for an elegant evening of red-carpet recognition and celebration. Awardees will receive the coveted Silva Awards Trophy.

Dr. Amando Silva was born in the Philippines on February 4, 1925. When World War II erupted, the young Amando volunteered as a guerrilla freedom fighter and subsequently joined the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) in the Philippines. Despite being severely wounded and living with a lifelong limp and enduring pain, Amando persevered in his pursuit of service. Utilizing his Veteran Affairs education benefits, he achieved his dream of becoming a Doctor of Medicine (MD) by graduating from the University of Santo Tomas.

Dr. Amando Silva practiced medicine in the United States, where he faced and overcame the prejudices against a Filipino doctor in the predominantly white medical community of the 1950s. He provided selfless community service in both the United States and the Philippines, serving with compassion in underprivileged communities for minimal pay until his passing on May 8, 1979.
